Kodokan Judo and Karate
Jujitsu
Jujitsu is the art of gentleness but the word "gentle" is often misunderstood.     A more accurate translation would be "the art of gaining victory  by yeilding . " Gentleness refers to the art's approach to self - defense .
In jujitsu defense, gentle does not mean weak.  A gentle defense does not oppose force, but yeilds to it .  A practitioner of jujitsu  avoids a head on collision of force moving around the attack, slipping inside the attack by stepping into a circle or otherwise defeating the attack without  having to meet it head on.
This is why jujitsu works equally well for young and old , large and small, weak and strong, men and women alike.
It does not require strength to be effective.
Jujitsu has  a long history,  with valued rituals and traditions.  It forms the cornerstone of  the unarmed martial arts of Japan.
The art of jujitsu was developed by the Samurai ,the warriors of ancient Japan. The Samurai were the most effective and dangerous warriors in history,  revered for their awesome fighting skills and respected for their nobility and honor. Jujitsu arose from a Samurai's need to defend himself against other Samurai in the event of having to fight unarmed  against an armed and armored swordsman.
